Inspired by an odd??leap in “frog tattoo” searches, we checked on the menagerie of animal body art. Because the beasts in question aren’t standard barnyard fare, we found quite a few interesting ink choices in our top 20 animal tattoo searches.

In the top spot, the delicate butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis, so it’s no surprise that deep thinkers flock to this tattoo to represent their changing moods. Following the wings of the butterfly are 19 other critters emblazoned on arms, backs, and legs all over the world…

  1. Butterfly Tattoos
  2. Dragonfly Tattoos
  3. Koi Fish Tattoos
  4. Scorpion Tattoos
  5. Tiger Tattoos
  6. Dolphin Tattoos
  7. Lion Tattoos
  8. Dove Tattoos
  9. Sparrow Tattoos

  10. Bear Tattoos

A couple final drops of ink…

?We were a bit surprised that dogs didn’t bark loud enough to make our top 20. We could blame it on the wide variety of breeds splitting the Search vote. Or the fact that you don’t find many Shih Tzu owners into body art. Either way, the top three breeds in Buzz are “bulldog tattoos,” “pitbull tattoos,” and “rottweiler tattoos.”

?Fish usually symbolize knowledge?but folks searching on “coy fish tattoo” should go back to the drawing board. Other popular fish tattoo searches swimming throught the Buzz included: “pisces fish tattoos,” “jesus fish tattoos,” and “tribal fish tattoos.”

What Inky Beast?

As fans prepare for the release of That Book Whose Ending Must Not Be Spoiled, we’ve noticed that one particular group of readers is waiting, hoping, and worrying about the fellow they love. “I have to admit I was NEVER this nervous,” confesses one devoted webmistress. Concerned over the fate of Harry James Potter? Well, sure, they’re curious about whether Harry lives or dies, but the hearts of these fans pound with another question: What becomes of their beloved Severus Snape? Will the Half-Blood Prince turn out to be evil or good?

Fan site “itrustsnape.com” has inspired a robust search attendance and boasts a Trust List nearly 2,000 names strong. These fans believe in their man, despite the fact that he was the reason behind Book 6 search spikes like “snape kills dumbledore.” Queries??these days??are more along the lines of “the great snape debate,” “snape friend or foe,” and “is snape good or evil?

Good, evil, or a little bit of both, the Professor is definitely charismatic. Witness the many Snape fan sites in the Yahoo! Directory. The SnapeCast podcast even celebrates Snape’s “fabulous fashion sense.” This could have a bit to do with Snape’s onscreen incarnation; ladies between 35-54 are particularly inclined to seek out “alan rickman.”

Some searchers invoke Professor Snape’s tormented youth and seek out “snape’s worst memory,” “young severus snape,” and?how could you not feel a stab of sympathy over this one?? “snape and unrequited love.”

Come July 21, will Snape fans also have their hearts broken? Or will the Order of the Trust List stand vindicated and proud?

The winners haven’t been announced, and already news of the Emmy nominations has produced??some belly-aching. Not to say many worthy shows didn’t get their props?everyone can release a collective??sigh??in regards to??the “Sopranos,” which received more category nods than any other show. Still, as the Academy repeatedly tinkers with its voting system, there will always be snubs (”The Wire“) and snorts (”Two and a Half Men”).

Magnificent Malady Faceoff

It’s a great time to be alive if you’re a fan of “Harry Potter.” It’s also a great time to be alive for actor Daniel Radcliffe. Searches on the young man who brings the wizard to life on the silver screen have doubled over the past week and he’s earned a spot in our top 100 queries.

The adorable actor is turning 18 in a few days and he’s conjured up the support of his peers. Teens are responsible for half of his searches, with girls 13-17 accounting for one quarter of his many queries.

With teen girls hot on his cape, images of young Radcliffe are a hot topic right now. Lookups on “daniel radcliffe new pictures” (+236%), “daniel radcliffe pictures” (+231%), and “daniel radcliffe equus pictures” (+165%) are clogging the Search box.

Welcome to the Buzz Multiplex, where we’ll take a weekly peek at which premieres are stirring up curiosity online. Searches don’t necessarily translate into box office, like in the case of “Hostel 2,” but advance interest gives us insight that sometimes studios miss out on (say, “Borat“).

??

While??this week’s??crop isn’t as big??as the blockbusters of the past few weeks, summertime searches continue to be healthy. This week, people are checking out the ‘do, seeing two guys say “I do,” figuring out what people do in space, and finding out the dos and don’ts when there’s a teen serial killer on the loose.

  1. Hairspray.” From the John Waters movie to Broadway and back again to the big screen, the toe-tapper isn’t just the most searched movie opening this week: The ladies (who make up 75% of queries) are looking for the “lyrics” to sing along, checking out the “soundtrack,” tracking the “premiere,” and getting more info on the stage version. Whoever says musicals are a ’50s throwback that only older generations can understand must not have kids? more than half the interest hails from kids under 18. As for the cast, cheeky star Nikki Blonsky??had an astounding 10,132% leap in searches, which??earned her??even more love than the popular kids, Zac Efron??and Amanda Bynes.
  2. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.” Two firefighters fall in love with the idea of benefits and decide they can live happily ever after. Adam Sandler and Kevin James play the title’s namesakes, but searches for the lucky men and the movie itself pale in comparison to those for the coveted Jessica Biel. Pre-teens and teens are big on the civil union concept, especially where Sandler is involved: They make up a whopping 35% of the look-ups. Searches not only come from people all the way in their mid-40s, but nearly 6 out of 10 of those folks are guys.
  3. Sunshine.” The low-key science creeper film of the week appeals to the male set, who make up almost two-thirds of the searches. While the under-21 age group is mildly interested, true sci-fi thriller fans are 21-54. Directory Danny Boyle, who has stirred up Buzz with offerings like “28 Days Later,” assembles a far-out crew which includes Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Yeoh.
  4. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.” The ever-reliable stream of teen horror movies continues with this little flick, with small searches matching its stature. Surprisingly, the Search surge hails from ages 21-44, which either means creepy older guys are turned on by star Amber Heard, or they like to watch lovesick boys getting offed.

The organic??label??apparently doesn’t guarantee immunity from recalls. Searches for Gerber, maker of edible baby mush, spiked more than 1,000% after it issued a voluntary call-back for its lumpy organic rice and organic oatmeal. That followed news of (and searches for) salmonella-tainted veggie snacks by Robert’s American Gourmet, prompting a?yes?Booty recall.

In Gerber’s case, the issue has to do with choking hazards rather than poisonous ingredients. While the baby food giant can’t blame its insoluble grains on the usual suspect (e.g. China), Robert’s has pointed fingers at the Middle Kingdom for the bad seasoning in its Veggie Booty snacks. China does have a history of food-safety issues, but these??new fiascos have??focused the spotlight on American safety regulations. Consumers have been scouring the Search box for details on “food safety” (29%), “fda” (13%), and, for the first time in Buzz, “food preservatives.”

The brouhaha, and lawsuits,??haven’t rippled into a??Search outrage over what natural eating really means. “Organic food,” generally in the top 40,000 searches, registered the merest 3% peep of additional interest in the past week. Terms??such as??buying local or food miles, often touted in sustainable circles, haven’t translated into queries…yet.

In the meantime, even as a Chinese health official calls for a streamlined food bureaucracy, China has gone on the offensive against “foreign media” hysteria and retaliated with its own bans on American exports like chicken feet, pork ears and pork intestines (hey, more for us!). Given the buzz over China’s speedy judgment upon those who impugn their food supplies, and scrutiny Stateside into the U.S. food chain of command, bureaucrats might want to beware. Heads, indeed, may roll.

Falcons QB Michael Vick faces some damning charges in his indictment on dog fighting charges. Searches on the embattled passer jumped 1,180% after word came down that the Feds were ready to tackle the case. Related queries on “michael vick indicted,” “michael vick dog fighting,” and “michael vick dogs” scrambled throughout the Buzz.

The fans in Atlanta are wondering what’s next?searches on “atlanta falcons message board” spiked and queries on the team jumped 140%. Will Vick be under center for the team’s kickoff in September? Hard to tell, but even our usually curious searchers didn’t have the stomach to look up “dog fighting.” The disgusting fiasco has ruined Vick’s rep, and it’ll be hard to win fans back with all the negative buzz surrounding the signal caller.

No Defense For Vick?

The World Series of Poker main event is down to the final table and searches on the annual card-stravaganza are anything but a flop. Queries on the tourney jumped 171% this week as the No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em field was whittled from 6,358 hopefuls to nine finalists.

Related lookups on “world series of poker main event” (+1,535%), “2007 world series of poker” (+389%), and “wsop” (+113%) were also aces this week. Railbirds hungry for the scoop on table action went all-in on searches for “poker news” and “world series of poker results.” Hold ‘Em diehards re-raised Buzz on “card player magazine” and “pokerpages.com.”

We weren’t surprised Vegas led all metro areas for searches on the WSOP. However, we were a bit puzzled by the metros following the gambling mecca in Search interest: Santa Barbara, CA and Sioux Falls, SD. Sin City and Sioux Falls? We suppose only the lure of No Limit action could bring them together.

When Emmy Meets the Buzz

It’s the middle of baseball season, but gamers have already turned their attention to a far rougher sport?football. Two new titles just hit shelves, and though neither is endorsed by John Madden, both games are doing brisk business in Search.

Like a stadium full of rowdy fans, the buzz on NCAA Football 2008 is especially loud. Searches on EA’s college gridiron franchise jumped 137% this week, and related queries on “ncaa football 2008 review” and “ncaa football 2008 rosters” both sprinted for big gains.

Rules prohibit NCAA Football from including the names of players. Not so for All-Pro Football 2K8. The game features NFL legends like Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and (bonus!) Ickey Woods. Pretty cool, but is their collective star power enough to upset the mighty Madden? With searches on “All-Pro” up 212%, we wouldn’t rule it out.

All this hot and muggy weather is getting to celebs. Which led us to wonder: If a celeb collapses without a ready excuse, do they make a sound? Call it what you will?exhaustion and dehydration are the most popular explanations for a celeb with circuitry problems. We hooked up to an IV of buzz data and rolled through an emergency ward excuse faceoff…

Magnificent Maladies
?? Exhaustion Dehydration
Recent celeb case Dave Chappelle Kelly Rowland
Definition “The state of being exhausted; extreme fatigue” “Excessive loss of water from the body or from an organ or body part, as from illness or fluid deprivation.”
What it really means… Used to be a flack’s favorite explanation for a troubled star. Has supplanted exhaustion as a go-to excuse in recent years. Usually applied after a night of strenuous party activity.
Past sufferers Isaac Hayes, Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears, and too many more to name Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and George H.W. Bush (?!)
More popular in Search? Perhaps our dear searchers need more naps. Exhaustion was too tired to beat out dehydration buzz this week. Our advice?drink lots of fluids. Dehydration doubled up on exhaustion searches.

We’ve been addicted to So You Think You Can Dance since its 2005 debut, so it’s never surprised us to see the healthy search appetite for SYTYCD fan essentials like music, videos, and results. This weekend’s Copa America final kicked up a wave of queries. The soccer tournament featuring the nations of South America bathed in Buzz for the duration of its three week run. However, interest in the finale pushed it to the summit of sports searches.

The final game of the tourney featured arch rivals Brazil and Argentina. Related queries on “brazil copa america” (+411%), “copa america final” (+170%), and “copa america schedule” (+158%) all scored with curious soccer fans.

Brazil blew out favored Argentina 3-0 to capture the Copa crown and searches on the “brazil soccer” squad notched a 218% increase. Brazilian futbol fanatics also rang up queries on “brazil vs argentina” (+475%) and “brazil flag” (+146%). Stars of Brazil’s national side also experienced a bump in Buzz?searches on Robinho (+47%), Daniel Alves (+44%), and Julio Baptista (+34%) all found the back of the net.

And just for kicks, here’s a graph comparing searches on Copa America and Major League Baseball over the past couple of weeks…

Copa America Blasts Buzz

The New York Daily News calls her a “hip-hop hothead.” Indeed, Remy Ma happens to be a young woman with a rap sheet longer than her list of rap hits. But the question remains: did Remy Ma shoot her homegirl over a stack of benjamins?

Searchers sought answers to this mystery of attempted murder in New York’s Meatpacking District?queries for “remy ma” (+469%), “remy ma pictures” (+871%), “remy ma shooting” (+90%) all took high-caliber positions in the Buzz after the Grammy-nominated MC surrendered to the NYPD late Saturday. She stands accused of shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph, a 23-year-old friend from her Bronx neighborhood. Luckily, the victim is reported to be in stable condition.

When we hear about rappers or athletes having trouble with the law, we rarely register surprise anymore. Accounts vary about what may have happened between Remy Ma and her friend, but there’s no disputing that this latest rapper’s run-in with the law can’t be healthy for hip-hop.

Some remember him as Fonzie’s younger cousin. Others recall a manny named Charles. But according to his new VH1 show, “Scott Baio Is 45??and Single,” the actor is just a little bummed out because he hasn’t been married.

His newly hired life coach isn’t cutting him any slack, and has instructed him to put his girlfriend on the back burner for two months, remain celibate, and revisit his past with a bunch of ex-girlfriends. Searchers are hot to watch the mess, and promptly looked up “scott baio is 45” (+4,481%) and “scott baio” (+1,050%), as well as “scott baio married,” “scott baio vh1,” and “scott baio shirtless.”

In the thick of summer, relief may come. Not from the heat wave, but from gas pump pressures.

Cheaper fuel is??good news, but the see-saw pricing may have dampened the American summer tradition of mobile trekking. “Road trips” buzz usually peaks in April, then dips in June, and rises again in July. This year, online interest in asphalt adventuring has dropped off 11% compared to last summer.

Still, there are those who can’t resist the lure of the highway or the backroads, whether it be for a “family road trip,” “college road trip,” or a “mother and daughter road trip.” If cheaper gas compels you to plan a last-minute trip, check over the routes the Buzz caravan is following…

  1. Road Trip Ideas.” The journey itself may be the destination, but people want suggestions on how to make the drive “interesting.” Some integrate “camping,” others look for scenic routes (”niagara falls,” “california,” “wisconsin“), and a few build theme-oriented treks (”ball park road trips“).
  2. Road Trip Planners.” Planning is the second most popular road trip-related search, as vacationers look for “tips,” “maps,” and “checklists.”
  3. Road Trip Games.” A DVD player just doesn’t compare to a rousing car game. Smart parents look for “printable road trip games” and suggestions for a “activity box.”
  4. Road Trip Music.” Playing radio tower roulette can be serendipitous, but long bouts of static don’t encourage grooving. Instead, travelers trick out the car into a mobile karaoke station with a “playlist” of the “best road trip songs.”
  5. Packing Food for a Road Trip.” Homemade snacks preclude caving in to impulse buys at the gas station convenience mart. People also search for coolers, grills, and other portable equipment to make snack attacks into meals.

So You Think You Have Dance Fever?

It was CNN week for Michael Moore, as he appeared on two of the network’s shows to discuss his new documentary, “Sicko.” On Monday, the venue was Wolf Blitzer’s “The Situation Room,” and an aggravated Moore responded to Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s “reality check” on some of the facts in his film. The dustup continued Tuesday, with Moore and Gupta together in the ring on “Larry King Live.”

So who wins in Search?

The day after he appeared on “The Situation Room,” curious searchers dialed up “michael moore” (+112%), “michael moore sicko” (+72%), “sicko movie” (+19%), and “sicko” (+7%). But interest waned within 24 hours?Larry’s King’s pairing of Moore and Gupta didn’t result in any extra queries for the film.

On the other side, CNN personalities Blitzer and King didn’t gain any bump in buzz from their interviews with Moore. But watch out for Gupta’s rising star. His discussion with Moore snagged him a boost of 92%.

Will CNN’s heavy focus on the film cause movement at the box office this weekend? We’ll find out on Monday.

Who could possibly resist the ice cream man? (Or woman, as the case may be.) Well, jingle-hating New Yorkers for one: They’ve authorized their finest to slap noise pollution summons on these mobile dairy purveyors. If that wasn’t curmudgeonly enough, the crackdown on chime began??during National Ice Cream Month.

With the ice cream guy silent, where shall we wander for our scoops? Welcome to the Buzz Ice Cream Parlor, gateway to sweet spots in Search. Summertime queries??made Cold Stone Creamery??the number one destination. Dairy Queen ranks second, although last year Buzz readers questioned its standing among distinguished creameries given its soft-serve approach. We don’t mind whipping a little air in our confections, especially from a place with a history as a community hub.

Haagen-Dazs (#6) and Dreyers (#15) have the advantage of pushing their goods over the malt shop counters and in grocery freezers. Yet, among store-bought brands, their cartons aren’t among the top three in searches. That honor belongs to little old Blue Bell, followed by Schwan’s, Ben & Jerry’s, Haagen-Dazs and Breyers.

UFC Analysis: Feeling Punchy?

However, we were a bit puzzled by the metros following the gambling mecca in Search interest: Santa Barbara, CA and Sioux Falls, IA. Sin City and Sioux Falls? We suppose only the lure of No Limit action could bring them together.

To some, “vintage” is just another way of saying “used.” However, to cooler-than-thou hipsters, vintage is a way of life. They drive vintage cars, shop for vintage furniture, and, of course, wear vintage clothes. And while many folks pursue these treasures on foot, savvy shoppers turn to Search.

Below, we rank the top “vintage” searches from the past week. Not surprisingly, “vintage clothing” topped the list, but several surprising entries also managed to crack the top 20. Read on and stay cool, daddy-o.

A couple of final notes on fairs…

?California county fairs dominate the list, taking??4 of the top??5 spots. Could it be that the coastal hipsters aren’t too jaded to embrace the corny traditions of summer time fairs?

?Top fair movers from the past week included: Delaware State Fair (+612%), L.A. County Fair (+586%), and Solano County Fair (+341%). California keeps on shinin’!

If you haven’t yet scrounged up the cash?or the extra space on the credit card?to bring home a PlayStation 3, Sony would like to help you out a little. You’ve just been granted 100 fewer excuses to resist a PS3, and one big reason to run to the search box.

Sony’s promise of a smaller price tag and a bigger hard drive in the coming month sent queries up over 300% for the soon-to-be $499 console. Further lookups for “ps3 price drop” (+251%) may predict a winning score for Sony’s price slashing tactic.

Ahead of the annual E3 (+80%) conference, we expect there will be more surprises and real-world easter eggs in the console gaming scene. In the meantime, Microsoft endures a billion-dollar recall on faulty models of its Xbox 360 (+43%) and the Nintendo Wii, sporting its relatively wee $249 price tag, remains the console both hard to beat and hard to find. If Sony wants to win the console wars, maybe it should keep slashing.

Queries on this baby brother of World Series events beat out “little league world series,” “world series of poker,” and theworld series” last week. The show begins with 16 teams of 3 players each, ends with a $250,000 prize, and is the perfect revenge for folks who cut math class to watch “Behind the Music” marathons and Tom Cruise movies.
